LETTERS FROM THE VILLAGER
Early voting - A letter from one of your readers said Peggy Hausman's "time has past." Ha! Like the song says: "She's Only Just Begun!" My home is one of more than 500 in The Woodlands with a "Retain Peggy Hausman" sign in our front lawn. Other than the fact that none of us are crazy about all the political signs sprouting up in front of Woodlands homes and businesses, I am proud to display my sign supporting Peggy. 500 signs translates into thousands of votes. No other candidate has come even close to the show of support Peggy has engendered in our community. Now that she is running at large, it gives every resident in the community an opportunity to show that a person who has dedicated 25 years to community service can be recognized above and beyond her "Hometown Hero" award. We need to retain Peggy Hausman on the Township Board so that she can help guide our new form of government towards resident control and resident interests. Our lawn signs are also a sign to the big money men and women in the community that they can't buy themselves a new Texas city. The Woodlands is home to more than 30,000 families. Peggy Hausman will help us to keep it a "a real hometown" for our families, children, grandchildren, and their children. Back up your lawn sign with your vote. Vote to retain Peggy Hausman and do it now with early voting at the community center.

Elect Peggy - Almost every one of us carefully reviews and pays our bills each month. But I wonder how many people actually read every line of their phone and cable bills? Somewhere, way down there near the bottom, you will find a line called “access fees” or “local fees” or some other obtuse statement. It might add a charge for as little as a couple of dollars or more than ten dollars. That’s a lot of money, especially when you multiply it by 30,000 plus homes every month over an unlimited number of years. It amounts to many millions of dollars! And, guess what? It’s money that’s being paid to cross over your property easements to bring the service into your home. Yes. It’s your land. Your house. Your phone. Your TV. But someone else is getting the money to “access” your land and your house. It’s The Woodlands Land Development Company, L.P. I’m suggesting that we have an opportunity here with our new Woodlands Township form of government to return all our money back into the hands of the residents. Peggy Hausman needs to get elected or “retained” on the new board so that she can continue her long fight to make sure that this money is spent for our community infrastructure, not just new construction – thus materially lowering our costs for services. It may take our becoming a true city before we can accomplish this, but let’s start right here, right now and elect Peggy Hausman to The Woodlands Township Board so that she can help us to “access” our own money.

Hausman for The Woodlands Township - When I first came to The Woodlands 20 years ago, the only people we saw outside our window were neighbors. The only vehicles we saw belonged to those same neighbors. We would leave our doors unlocked. Children freely played outside with their friends, walked to the nearest park or school, and the idyllic quality of life promised by founding father George Mitchell was in evidence everywhere. Sadly, that is no longer the case here in The Woodlands. Now even with locked doors, we find strangers invading homes. Our cars are no longer safe even in our own driveways. We escort our children to schools and parks. Some of this is simply attributable to growth. But most of it is because we are not exercising what the safety industry calls “reasonable care.” If that stranger cruising our streets looking for an opportunity to commit a crime sees a Woodlands police car cruising the same streets, he will quickly drive out of the area. If the word spreads that The Woodlands now has its own police force, children will soon be safe on the streets again. If the criminals caught by The Woodlands police force are brought to justice in The Woodlands, by judges and justices of the peace who are elected by Woodlands residents, the criminal element will soon understand that the only green they will find in The Woodlands is in our trees and lawns. This is why I am strongly supporting Peggy Hausman’s candidacy for The Woodlands Township Board of Directors. Peggy has made ‘Law Enforcement’ a top priority for the new board. I agree with Peggy’s position that “our Achilles heel in The Woodlands is the lack of our own Law Enforcement.” An urban police department with a traffic division, courts and judges is now a necessity here. Let’s make our new taxes truly effective by giving the residents who are already here what they need more than statues, fountains and water taxis: the peace of mind promised in George Mitchell’s “new town.” Vote to keep Peggy Hausman on The Woodlands Township Board on May 10.
